Sana Ullah painting of a community gathering beneath an ancestral tree, with women carrying harvests, a sapling, flowing water, homes and solar panels
Our Land, Our Heritage, Our Future2026

A collection with purpose

Land is more than a boundary.

Art Meets Activism brings together four paintings by Sana Ullah to make visible what is often reduced to a map line or legal record: land as home, inheritance, livelihood and responsibility.

The collection moves from community stewardship and ancestral heritage to women’s public voice and ecological restoration. Each work resonates with Land Rights Defenders’ commitment to secure customary tenure and the people who protect culture, food systems, water and future generations.

This is an ongoing institutional collection and fundraising initiative, shared through partner exhibitions, community showcases and online discovery—not a collection that begins and ends on one evening.

Sana Ullah painting of a community gathering beneath an ancestral tree, with women carrying harvests, a sapling, flowing water, homes and solar panels

01 / 04 · Living heritage · Community stewardship

Our Land, Our Heritage, Our Future

A community’s future takes root where its heritage is respected and its land remains secure.

A towering tree shelters a gathering of elders and community members beneath golden light. Its inscription—‘Our Land, Our Heritage, Our Future’—gives the painting its title. A traditional leader joins a circle of dialogue; women carry the harvest and a sapling is planted. Flowing water, homes and solar panels bring customary life into conversation with sustainable progress.

The collection’s centrepiece celebrates LRD’s vision of communities governing their resources with dignity: protecting cultural heritage, food sovereignty, ecosystems and sustainable livelihoods through secure customary tenure.

Sana Ullah painting of a living green hand-shaped landscape with trees and water against cracked earth and barren tree stumps

02 / 04 · Restoration · Ecological responsibility

The Reclaiming Hand — A Sacred Promise to the Earth

Environmental devastation is not the final chapter. The possibility of restoration rests in our hands.

Cracked earth, barren tree stumps and a muted skyline surround a hand-shaped form that becomes a living ecosystem. Foliage, wildflowers, flowing water and clear sky contrast with the damaged landscape. Where the living hand meets the soil, the painting imagines guardianship, resilience and hope.

The work echoes LRD’s commitment to defending customary land tenure and supporting communities as stewards of their ancestral holdings. Legal protection and environmental care are connected responsibilities.

Sana Ullah painting of a woman in green attire and a colourful headwrap speaking at a podium before an attentive audience

03 / 04 · Women’s leadership · Public voice

It’s Her Time to Shine

A woman stands at the podium—not at the margins—and an audience turns to hear her.

Against deep blue curtains, a woman in green attire, a vivid headwrap and golden neckwear addresses an attentive audience. Her confident presence celebrates leadership and the importance of listening to voices too often excluded from public decisions.

LRD’s land-rights mission includes the participation and leadership of women. Legal literacy, community advocacy and inclusive decision-making connect land stewardship with the authority of the people whose lives depend on it.

Sana Ullah family portrait of four people before a mountain landscape, including a traditionally clothed family leader and Nana Kwesi Osei Bonsu in field gear

04 / 04 · Ancestral memory · Unity across traditions

Sacred Heritage — Unity Across Traditions

Shared ancestry can hold a family together across generations and expressions of faith.

The central figure honours the late, immediate past head of the family; the women beside him are principal mothers of the family. At the far left stands Nana Kwesi Osei Bonsu in field gear. Mountains, trees and a stream form an allegorical sanctuary, evoking ancestral roots and the strength of shared belonging.

This work of remembrance and solidarity connects LRD’s mission with preserving lineage, traditional history and shared stewardship. Unity across faiths can strengthen the relationships through which an ancestral legacy is carried forward.
