A Special Case: Protecting the Legacy of Empress Tutuwaa
The indigenous people of Benimasi-Boadi in Kumasi, Ghana, face a critical threat to their ancestral lands. These lands hold the sacred burial grounds of Ashanti revered empress, Tutuwaa, the cherished spouse of King Osei Tutu I, founder of the Ashanti Empire of the ancient Gold Coast.
Land Rights Defenders Inc. stands firmly with the Benimasi-Boadi community in their fight to defend their ancestral heritage. Their claim appears valid pursuant to Section 2 of Ghana’s Land Act 2020 (Act 1036). We are currently financing a legal suit in the Ghanaian appellate court to protect their land rights and ensure the sacred burial grounds of Empress Tutuwaa are preserved for future generations.
